ASME RAIL TRANSIT VEHICLE STANDARDS COMMITTEE FORMED

On April 3rd, the ASME Council on Codes and Standards approved the formation of an ASME Rail Transit Vehicle Standards Committee with the following scope:

"The Rail Transit Vehicle Standards Committee covers safety, functional, performance and operability requirements for rail transit vehicles, mechanical systems and components, and structural requirements. Rail transit includes conventional subway cars and light rail cars and excludes freight, commuter, high speed or any other vehicles already under the jurisdiction of the Federal Railway Administration."

The committee will complement the IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee which has been developing electrical standards for rail transit for the last two years. Freight, commuter and mainline passenger rail are not part of the committee's scope because these areas are covered both by Federal regulations and by standards activities conducted by the Association of American Railroads and the American Public Transit Association. Until the Council on Codes and Standards acted, 2.3 billion annual riders of subway and light rail systems in the United States were not protected by either standards or Federal regulations governing mechanical systems.

The new committee will be chaired by Stan Canjea, light rail transit program manager for New Jersey Transit. The first activity of the new committee will be to develop standards covering car body strength and crashworthiness for light rail cars. It is estimated modern standards in this area can reduce the risk of passenger injury in a collision and also save over $10 million a year in reduced energy consumption and more efficient vehicle design.

The new committee would like to request the help of the ASME Rail Transportation Division in identifying persons who should be invited to serve on the new standards committee. Please send any suggestions to Stan Canjea Voice: 1+973.491.8859 Fax: 1+973.491.8849, or Email: cbopsxc@njtransit.state.nj.us.
